City Commission Nixes Two Meriwether Proposals

Posted: Updated:

The Meriwether property by river's edge at the entrance to the Lewis & Clark riverboat sits empty.  After tonight's Bismarck City Commission meeting, it's going to sit empty a bit longer.

Two proposals were submitted.  Two proposals were rejected.

The first was for a basic bait and tackle shop.  The second, submitted by the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation, called for a museum and ticket counter to support the riverboat, but the group wanted the City to build the structure.

While the City wants any use to accommodate the riverboat, Commissioners are not looking to invest money in a building -- but they are thinking bigger.  "It's back to the drawing board and a little brainstorming.  We thought we might get a lot of different and great ideas and that didn't happen," says Parrell Grossman, Bismarck City Commissioner.
The Commission is hoping it will happen the second time around.  They're inviting the public to submit informal ideas for what they'd like to see on what the Commission says is a special parcel.
