Century Volleyball Dominating Already

Posted: Updated:
Bismarck, ND -

Century Volleyball is coming off of a state title in 2012.
They've played in 4 of the last 5 state championship games.
Yet, after losing 6 players to graduation, the Patriots are a team that will have to learn as they go, and that will be on the court.
Jon Schaeffer has more.

Winning-- it has become a tradition at Century for Girl's athletics.
After a state championship last year-- the Patriots volleyball team will feel the pressure all season.

(Alaina Furtsch) "We do have a big target on our back this fall from taking state last year and it's something we have to defend and something that everyone is going to try and take from us. We just have to fight back and take it for ourselves."

Shay Bense is one of two seniors along with Alaina Furtsch, both are being looked at to step up in their roles for this Patriots squad.

(Shay Bense)"We gotta be big leaders this year. We have a lot of juniors and a couple returning from last year so that was also easy cuz we have a couple that will help us out."

Bense is returning as the setter for Century, while, Furtsch is the tallest player on the roster at 6'1" and will be important at the net.The coaches know seniors go along ways toward guiding a young team.

(Sara Bohrer) "That's huge. I think the girls can know there's some confidence in that and so if they need to look to somebody or they're unsure of what to do they can go to their setter who's like the quarterback and ask her where should I be hitting what should I be doing and that's one thing that Shay has done a good job of."

(Jamie Zastoupil)"Alaina can be a huge impact on the blocking side. and influencing those younger girls. When you have the jv team practicing with your varsity team I think she'll be a great guide for our middles."

The Patriots are already 2 and 0 in the WDA, and have been tested against Bismarck High, after being down two sets to none, they came back to win in 5 sets. This group is growing up quickly.

(BENSE) "It was obviously a pretty good start. We were pretty excited. It was a tough game playing 5 games especially during the start of the season."

But they won't sit back as they look to carry on Century's winning tradition.

(Furtsch)"We're off to a good start but we gotta make sure that we keep pushing ourselves in practice and becoming better and better."
