City Commission Grants Itself Sidewalk Discretion Going Forward

Posted: Updated:

This summer's sidewalk controversy sees some resolution after tonight's Bismarck City Commission meeting.

The City has been undertaking to construct sidewalks pursuant to an ordinance requiring them in all residential areas, even old neighborhoods specifically designed without sidewalks.   For some areas, this would mean upending decades-old landscaping.

However, tonight Commissioners voted unanimously to change the ordinance to afford the City discretion.  For vocal opponents of sidewalks the City had wanted to install on Santa Gertrudis Drive -- where doing so could mean ripping out 40 to 50 trees -- the City now has the ability to give the area a pass.
