Robot-Assisted Weight Loss Surgery

Posted: Updated:

A medical robot that's been assisting surgeons in Bismarck makes history, helping to complete the first weight-loss procedure of its kind in the state.

According to Sanford Health officials. this is the first "sleeve gastrectomy" operation, done with the assistance of a robot, in the state.

The surgery basically removes much of a patient's stomach to assist with weight loss.

The surgery itself has been around for around a decade, but Dr. Bree Dewing doing performed the surgery for the first time with the assistance of the robot.

She says it's a good tool to stay on top of recent technology in the operating room.

"It allows the surgeon more precision and accuracy, smaller incisions, fewer complication rates, shorter hospital stay, a lot of different advantages to the patient over even other minimally invasive procedures like laparoscopy." says Dr. Bree Dewing, Weight-loss surgeon.

Sanford first got the machine in 2011.

Dr. Dewing says in the future they may start performing gastric bypass procedures with the assistance of the robot as well.
