It takes hundreds of volunteers to bring the annual Norsk Høstfest to fruition each year.
Among those volunteers, you'll find the loyal few who have been there from the beginning.
In tonight's Community Matters, Jennifer Thorgramson introduces us to Kari Mahle (CAR-y Molly) --- a Høstfest volunteer with decades of experience.
The Norsk Høstfest will be celebrating 36 years of Scandinavian heritage festivals in Minot the first week of October.
And among the smiling faces you'll find in Oslo Hall, Kari Mahle will be celebrating 36 years of volunteer work for the Hostfest.
(Kari Mahle, Høstfest Volunteer) "We're going to make the creme for the vestland lefse for the Høstfest."
While the menu has changed a number of times at the Sons of Norway booth, Kari's happy, helping hands have endured.
"Quite a bit of flavoring."
(Kari Mahle, Høstfest Volunteer) "The first year, we had like 2,000 people or something like that and we thought that was a big success."
"And then we add vanilla."
Today, Kari is volunteering her time to make one of many batches of almond creme --- the filling for Vestland lefse, what she calls one of the Sons of Norway best sellers.
"And away we go. It's a little messy."
(Kari Mahle, Høstfest Volunteer) "In the beginning we had to participate in everything because there wasn't that many involved but that has grown too. It's just like a reunion! You run around and see all the other vendors that come back year after year and the atmosphere is just amazing."
When she's not at the Sons of Norway booth, she's in the bunad show, the sweater show, and the Scandinavian relics show.
"It just feels like fun! It doesn't feel like work."
(Kari Mahle, Høstfest Volunteer) "Okay and that's all there is to it."
And her volunteer preparations sweeten the deal.
(Kari Mahle, Høstfest Volunteer) "It's gotten so big now that you feel like a small piece in the pie. But still, every little bit helps. It's exciting."
