Eye on Health: Fitness Project

Posted: Updated:

Have you heard of the "Freshman15"? It's quite common for college students to gain a few pounds.

With that in mind, there's a research project underway at Minot State University to help students stay fit, and eat better. Here's this week's Eye on Health.

Students at Minot State University have a beautiful new wellness center to work out in. That's a plus for the 130 students who have signed up to be a part of a new research project underway thru Dr. Terry Eckmann's fitness and physical education classes. The 8 week project involves tracking fitness, and nutrition though something called a Fitbook. The creator of the Fitbook was in Minot to launch the project.

Angela Manzanares, Fitlosophy "It's a 12-week journal, that helps in the process of setting goals, it breaks it down on a week by week basis"

Angela created the Fitlosophy in 2008, and she has had a great deal of success. It sells for 22.95, it's sold in Target stores nationwide, and there is also international distribution. The easy - to carry book, is a usable way to keep track of goals. The word calorie is not used. It's about getting the right foods in your body each day, and keeping active.

Angela "a lot of times we forget all the things we need to do to stay fit"

Along with the fitbook, there's an AP, so that you can plug in fitness and nutrition information on your phone. There are four groups of students involved in the MSU project. Some will use the Fitbook, others the AP, some will use both, and others will use nothing.

Angela "what we are trying to figure out is the component of technology, we haven't really looked into that

At the end of the 8 weeks, results will show if these products help the students stay healthier. For Eye on Health I'm Carla Burbidge.

It's almost here...The 2014-2015 school year is less than a month away, and districts around the region are trying to get a handle on just how many kids will come through the doors on that first day.
