Wet Season For Papa's Pumpkin Patch

Posted:

The days are winding down for kids and families to get out to Papa's Pumpkin Patch.

The patch has been closed a lot this year due to rain.

With just days left before it closes for the season, Papa is hoping mother nature will cooperate to help keep the doors open.

<<These puddles are the reason Papa's Pumpkin Patch has been closed nine days since it opened for the season.

"So eight inches since the first of September, normally we would have two, so four times the normal amount of moisture for the season," Dave Pearce, owner of Papa's Pumpkin Patch said.

In the 30 years that Papa's Pumpkin Patch has been open, Pearce says this year hasn't been the worst as far as weather is concerned, but it's definitely been the most challenging.

"This year we've lost one whole weekend and two Saturdays which have been part of that mix, which is really critical because that's when families have time and opportunity to come and live the traditions that I think the patch has become for them," Pearce said.

The wet weather is also putting a damper on business.

"Right now we're running behind, I mean we've dropped off significantly because of the loss of this past weekend," Pearce said.

A lot of the income the patch makes goes to various charities, but just because business is slower doesn't mean those charities won't be getting a donation from Papa's Pumpkin Patch.

"Obviously we still have to pay the heat and lights and rent and fuel, but they're our labor costs and we're not going to lose them either, so we're going to do the best we can to get by, we're just not going to have a whole lot extra that we're putting in the savings account," Pearce said.

For those still wanting to come out, there's still plenty of pumpkins that need a home.

"And we have cookies, we have a pluthera of cookies left for kids, so yeah we're going to be in fine shape with inventory, what we need is just a little break in the weather so people can enjoy it," Pearce said.>>

This Saturday is scheduled to be the last day Papa's Pumpkin Patch is open, but Papa is working to find volunteers to keep it open through Sunday.
