ND Insurance Department: Some Saving Hundred$ During Medicare Open Enrollment

You can potentially save hundreds -- which is why the North Dakota Insurance Department is encouraging you to compare your current Medicare prescription drug plan with new options available in 2014.

The Department is in the midst of a statewide tour to assist residents in switching or enrolling in what is commonly referred to as "Part D."  North Dakotans can choose from among 29 different plans.  "They can do a comparison to see if we can find a plan for them that covers all their medications but is less expensive, hopefully, than what they were paying last year," David Zimmerman, Director, Consumer Assistance Division, ND Insurance Department.

Meanwhile, the Insurance Department is receiving many calls about the Affordable Care Act -- and how it will impact Medicare.  Officials say one place you will see a difference is when you hit the "donut hole."  That's the period when Medicare participants see a gap in their prescription drug coverage.

"Medicare beneficiaries are considered covered so they have nothing to do with this whole Marketplace thing.  This donut hole as part of the Affordable Care Act is slowing going away.  And so every year when people used to have to pay 100% of the cost once they hit that, now they get, for their brand name medications, a 52-1/2% discount," says Zimmerman.

For generic drugs, the discount is 28%.  If you'd like more information, call "211" from anywhere in North Dakota.  Open enrollment for Medicare prescription drug coverage ends December 7th.
