The city of Burlington is a step closer to constructing another part of its flood control plan.
The Ward County Water Board today approved Burlington's application to the State Water Commission for building a dike in the sports complex area of town.
The proposed dike would be significantly higher than the crest level of the 2011 flood, and would tie in to the existing Corps of Engineers dike system.
The dike along the Des Lacs River is the latest step in
Burlington toward making the town able to withstand a flood equal to the 2011 flood that inundated dozens of homes in the community.
The town has already purchased several homes along the existing dike system to allow for the building of higher levees for better protection.
