Mountain Lion Shot South of Bismarck

Posted:

A mountain lion is shot and killed this afternoon south of Bismarck.

It's believed to be the same animal that was first caught on a trail camera October 20th.

There have been other sightings in recent days near Prairie Rose Elementary School.

Tom Doering was deer hunting this afternoon when he saw the mountain lion at the Apple Creek Wildlife Management Area.

<<"I would've rather shot a deer but I heard and seen in the paper how much trouble it'd been causing, everybody kind of thought about it ahead of time before we went out that might see a cat today hunting and sure enough," Tom Doering said.>>

Jeb Williams with the North Dakota game and fish says it's not uncommon for a Mountain Lion to move into a populated area and explore new territory.

<<"With Mountain Lion behavior it's actually not that unusual any time you're having a dispersal of young females or males, especially young males they're the ones that are usually disperse long distance and when they do that, the corridors they follow are usually some type of drainage, either creek or a river and in this case we have Apple Creek and the Missouri River," Jeb Williams said.>>

Williams says it was an 85-pound female cat... between two and three years old and had not been bred.
