St. Mary's ready for the Championship Game

Posted: Updated:
Bismarck, ND -

Its been almost 20 years since St. Mary's won a state football championship, 1994 was their last title.
The Saints have worked their way into the Dakota Bowl, with a 10-1 season, Wahpeton is now all that stands in their way.

Noah Krebs- we knew coach Smrekar needed a win we knew our program needed a win and its motivating us to go to the playoffs and its been the driving force for us

Dan Smrekar- yeah it does I won't lie you do this for a long time and you're mostly just excited about football I'm excited about playing well and excited about wins, and one more win, the whole program with the players are excited

The Saints made the championship game after a last minute win over Fargo Shanley. Noah Krebs forced a fumble, followed by the Saints marching 30 yards for the winning TD. That last minute win has the Saints riding a wave of confidence.

Noah Krebs- greatest game we've ever played in as a team it brought us so much closer we preach hustle and we preach never giving up and our coaches on the sideline told us to never give up we came through for them we never quit on each other and I know my teammates and my back and I had their back

Dan Smrekar- I've always believed some place in the playoffs something has to bounce your way you need a little bit of luck go your way to continue in the playoffs and we got the ball to bounce our way at the end of that game, but we caused 5 turnovers against Shanley defense causes turnover and that gives us a chance and that picked up their spirits and revved up the offense

In the title game, the Saints will come up against a Wahpeton team that runs the triple option, and has a deep play book. St. Mary's and their dynamite defense are prepared for the pressure the game, and the Huskies will bring.

Noah Krebs- challenged last game with a lot of pressure with 1 minute left so I think our team will be just fine we have great senior leaders on our team and like I said we have each others back and we;All play like we know we can

Dan Smrekar- they're ready they want to be there as I've said all year long this group has had very high expectations going in what they're doing is living up to expectations so they'll be ready to play

St. Mary's and Wahpeton are the 3rd game of the day.
The Saints and Huskies play at 3 pm.
Games start at 9 am, you can watch ON ABC stations locally
