Black Friday to Gray Thursday?

Posted:

If Black Friday shopping is a tradition for your family, you may no longer need to stay up all night.

Gray Thursday is becoming a universal term this year as many stores are opening doors on Thanksgiving.

O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree - Kirk Stevens does supply these.

(Nat:"The fur trees are the most popular trees now.")

"I've been in the business for about 40 years. Actually my dad started the business back in Fargo. He had a hardware store and when we were kids we ran, my sisters and I ran the lot and I've been doing it pretty much ever since," says Kirk Stevens, Owner of Stevens Christmas Trees.

Normally, it's a tradition for him to open the day after Thanksgiving, but this year is a little different.

"I was over here getting trees ready and customers were coming so I decided to open up a little early this year," says Stevens.

And he's not the only one.

The infamous Black Friday seems to have faded into Gray Thursday.

"We're excited to be opening at 8pm on Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday is one of the most competitive days there is in the retail industry. When we decide the opening time, we balance the decision based on the retail environment, the needs of our guests, as well as the needs of our team members," says Lori Miller, Target Store Manager.

Some don't mind the earlier openings...

"You have somewhere to go, instead of sitting in the house after football."

For others...

"I think it's wrong. I think they should allow their employees to spend Thanksgiving with their families."

"I am not in agreement with that. That Thanksgiving kind of gets overlooked and I don't think that's right that employees have to take away from their families to open their stores

"I think that's wrong. I think Thanksgiving should be a day where people can be home, be with their families."

But perhaps for the diehard deal-seekers, the turkey can wait or be gobbled down beforehand.

Either way, the Christmas shopping season begins soon.

On your mark, get set, go.

Some stores opening on Thursday are Best Buy at 6pm, Kirkwood Mall at 8pm, and Kmart at 6am.
