Scam Warning

Posted: Updated:

A scam warning tonight: KX receives a call from a woman saying she may have been the victim of a scam. She says a man called her claiming to be from the Social Security Administration and was notifying her of an increase in her social security income for 2014.

The man already had her social security number, but pressed her for more information--including her mother's maiden name, checking account numbers--even the date her social security check arrives in the mail.

She did not give all the information the man was requesting-- but asked for a phone number, and to speak to a supervisor.

That man told her he was calling from Lincoln, North Dakota.

But it turned out to be an out of state number.

Parrell Grossman with the Consumer Protection Division says under no circumstances should you give-- or even confirm -- your personal information to a caller like this.

He says legitimate entities will never call you out of the blue.

If you get a suspicious call, hang up and report it to the Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-472-2600.
