Belcourt Shooting Victim ID

Posted: Updated:

One person is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation that killed one man.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Joel Sherman.

The F-B-I says a suspect in the case surrendered over the weekend.

Sherman was found dead early last Wednesday in the Eagleview neighborhood in Belcourt.

The shooting prompted a lockdown of area schools and a region-wide man hunt.

One person wanted in the case is now in tribal custody, facing charges.

Police on the reservation would not comment on the investigation.

Relatives of Sherman say he left behind two children, including a ten-month-old daughter.

They say they're still in disbelief that he's gone.

(CLARENCE MARCELLAIS/Joel Sherman's Uncle) Very lovely child. Beautiful child. Very happy child. He was that throughout his life. He enjoyed his family. He had a big family and we all loved him.

Officials have not revealed the identity of the suspect who surrendered this weekend.
