Local Ski Patrol Receives National Recognition

Posted: Updated:

A squad of local responders gets recognized nationally.

The ski patrol at Huff Hills recently won the national 'outstanding small alpine ski patrol' award.

The team is not in it for the glory.

It's a frigid opening out at Huff Hills, but extreme cold is not enough to stop skiers and snowboarders from showing up.

Staying warm on days like this can be an uphill battle for everyone on the slopes.

The ski patrol is also here, ready to respond the moment someone needs them.

"We just try to get someone up there as quickly as we can, we also try to get someone to the top of the hill to see if we need the toboggan to get them down." says Brian Beattie, ski patrol.

The team of more than 40 ski patrol volunteers carries a lot of experience.

"As an EMT at the time, a bunch of other EMTS were getting the patrol together, so asked me to join, I joined." says Scott Eckroth, ski patrol.

Scott Eckroth has been here ever since, for more than 20 years.

In all that time, one accomplishment sticks out the most.

"Seeing my daughter growing up from that three year old running, when she joined was probably the biggest highlights of the career." says Scott Eckroth.

"I've been skiing since I was three, my father over there, he got me into this so it's just time spent with him, and these guys too, they're part of the group." says Nicole Eckroth, Scott's daughter.

The group's closeness and dedication has paid off.

They recently won this traveling trophy, but the most rewarding part of volunteering outside on the coldest of days, seems to be the warm feeling among those patrolling the slopes.

"They're characters when they're given a chance and they're very professional when they need to be that, fun bunch to be around, very fun to be around, take training very seriously." says Beattie.

"The camaraderie, the friendships, some of the greatest friends I have are on the patrol, it's hard to beat." says Ann Brendel, ski patrol.

Along with the ski patrol's outstanding small alpine ski patrol award, you can also check out a hall of fame inside the lodge at Huff Hills.
