County Takes Property for Jail

County Takes Property for Jail

Posted: Updated:

Ward County is using eminent domain to acquire property needed for a planned jail expansion and remodeling project.

The county served Ogden Newspapers - owners of the Minot Daily News - with quick take-eminent domain action on November 27th.

The property in question is a parking lot near the newspaper office, directly north of the existing jail.

The county has put 304-thousand dollars into a fund to pay for the property - that's the value as figured in an independent appraisal performed recently.

The county and the newspaper company have been negotiating over the parking lot for more than a year as the county has been planning for building a new office building and expanding the jail.

The taking of the land cleared the way for the county commission to vote today to have engineers do preliminary work needed to allow an architect to develop a design for the jail expansion.
