Reindeer at the Zoo

You know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen and Rudolph just to name a few.

But have you ever seen reindeer up close...?

The Dakota Zoo has had this pair of reindeer for about a year.

Senior Keeper Greg Schmit gets to work with them at least once a week.

He says they're a very gentle deer, very quiet, and their knees click when they walk.

The reindeer are at the zoo year round but sometimes get a little extra attention around the holidays.

"Especially this time of year. Parents bring them out to see, you know, and they ask how come they're not flying away or, you know, you kind of hear those questions. You know, why the cage isn't covered but they're very fascinated with them and they'll spend a lot of time here looking at them," says Greg Schmit, Senior Keeper, Dakota Zoo.

Schmit says they hope to keep this pair of reindeer for about 15 to 20 years.
