Beware of Scams During Holiday Season

Posted:

It's not just the season for giving--it's also a time for taking.

Parrell Grossman with Consumer Protection says he sees an increase in scams this time of year.

This is just one example. A Bismarck woman received this letter claiming she won a few thousand dollars from a British lottery.

They even included a check for her to cash worth close to 39-hundred dollars.

Grossman says people can be left feeling desperate for money or giving this time of year.

"Pick up the phone, call the Attorney General's Office, call a loved one, a family member ask your neighbor if they know something about it but please be extra cautious around the holiday's because it's just a great time for con artists. If it wasn't they wouldn't be making all these contacts at Christmas," says Parrell Grossman with Consumer Protection."

Here is a photo of the check sent to the Bismarck woman.

It looks authentic.

Grossman says these checks will cash--but you'll be left paying the bill.

"What will happen is your bank will notify you in about two weeks that that's a fraudulent check and you've already wired that money and your never going to get it back and now your bank is going to say, Mr. Grossman, we need that two-thousand dollars put back in your account and it's going to be you that put's it back in," says Parrell Grossman.
