Beware of Phone Scam

Posted:

If your phone rings, you may want to pay close attention to your caller id before you answer.

An international sex hotline scam is circulating nationwide.

Beware of the area codes 473, 809, 876, or 284.

The prefix 473 is the one seen in North Dakota.

It's charging people large amounts of money if you answer or call back.

Parrell Grossman, Director of Consumer Protection says they've received over 20 calls from consumers regarding this scam.

"Never call back a telephone number you're not familiar with. If your phone rings and the call is immediately disconnected before you can answer it. You know, one of two things, they called you accidentally or two - it's a scam. If that call is important, they'll call again. And then if you recognize the number in a subsequent call, be careful and be very suspicious," says Parrell Grossman, Director, Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division.

Grossman says if you're a victim of this phone scam to either contact your cell phone or landline company to dispute the charges or call the attorney general's consumer protection division at 1-800-472-2600.
