Daycare Helper

Posted:

Schools across the state closed today because of the weather.

For most kids, that means a day off.

For others, it means more work.

Luckily for 12-year-old Breanna Lindahl, she likes her job...

"Okay Breanna you can come find them.."

Breanna Lindahl works best from home.

"Ready or not, here I come"

She's here because she has the day off.

Bismarck Public Schools closed -- because of what first grader Logan Thomas describes as...

"Freezing cold"

Being 12-years-old, the state classifies Breanna as a 'daycare helper'

So, Melissa Johnson puts her right to work.

"I like Breanna, my daughter is my helper when there is no school"

"I play with the kids, keep them company, so she can get lunch and everything else done. I help out after lunch with naps and I help clean up."

Melissa usually has a different mix of kids at her home daycare.

Lily's schedule is messed up because she's not at school.

"I would be eating snack by now"

"I'll start warming it up okay..."

A few other kids are missing because they are spending the day at home with their parents.

"Guys, should we play?"

The kids usually get 20 minutes a day outside, but not in this weather...

"We try to play tag and stuff we would do outside, in the house"

Today, that game is hide-and-seek.

And Breanna, is a pro.

"I found brinlee and lily first"

Mike Chaussee, KX News

Breanna says her only downfall as a daycare helper -- she can't cook.

Bismarck Public Schools canceled school for the first time this year.

The make-up day is scheduled for March 14th.
