Everyone has an interest in railway safety, federal regulators, railroads, shippers and the communities the trains are moving through.
That's according to Senator John Hoeven at a meeting today addressing railroad safety concerns.
Hoeven and Senator Heidi Heitkamp met with the Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration head Cynthia Quarterman to discuss steps the DOT is taking to improve railway transportation safety.
Primary concerns the construction of more modern railcars, appropriate speed limits, and ground track conditions.
(Senator Heidi Heitkamp, (D) North Dakota) "Not only are we giving certainty to our producers, certainty to our shippers, but we're responding to very legitimate concerns about safety."
(Senator John Hoeven, (R) North Dakota) "This has to be a shared effort, not only the regulatory industries but also the railroad and the shippers, all of us have to be sure that we're doing everything we can to move crude as safely as possible."
