City Sales Tax Collections

City Sales Tax Collections

Posted: Updated:

Sales tax collection in the City of Minot will finish down from last year -- but that was an expected finish to 2013 according to Finance Director Cindy Hemphill.

The final numbers for 2013 won't be calculated for another few days, but through the first 11 months, collections are down about eight or nine percent.

Of course, that is comparing this year to last -- another big year for construction in the city with many homeowners still working on rebuilding from the 2011 flood.

Those purchases pushed collections up...so much so that when the city creates the new budget...officials are using pre-flood year numbers which are more realistic on what to expect.

(Cindy Hemphill, City of Minot Finance Director) "To come equal with 2012, we would have to collect over 2 million dollars in sales tax for December and the largest month we have ever had was 1.5 million and that was in 2012...probably July so I will assume that we will be down about between 7 to 10 percent with sales tax collections."

Again the final numbers should be released sometime next week.
