Joerger In First Year as Grizz Head Coach

Posted: Updated:

Sports Director Tia Streeter was in Memphis, Tennessee this weekend to catch up with former Dakota Wizards head coach Dave Joerger.
Joerger is in his first year as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, the Grizz are 17 and 19 to start the season.

" (TIA Streeter- Sports Director: ) In the minor leagues Joerger was a championship machine but in his first year as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, things haven't come quite as easy."
(Tia Streeter-Sports Director) Its been a whirlwind year for Joerger. The Grizzlies made the Western Conference Finals last season. And then 'let go' head coach Lionel Hollins in June,  just two weeks later Joerger earned his first head coaching job in the NBA. But with summer league and the season starting. There's been little time for Joerger to breathe.
(Dave Joerger-Memphis Head Coach)  its a lot. It doesn't stop. Its 90 games before you get to the playoffs. Its day in and day out. And I think one of the things I've learned is really trying to stay even keel all the time. Don't get too excited about a couple wins or too low in the rough patches its such a long run deal.
(Tia Streeter-Sports Director) Dave Joerger isn't even 40 years old. Yet, he's already achieved a job at the highest level of his sport.
(Dave Joerger-Memphis Head Coach) I'm saying, I'm, comfortable with the experience I have prior to this job head coaching wise. I'm not saying I'm doing a great job or a bad job. But the biggest things with this league, the season is long. You have to bring it every single night and compete.
(Tia Streeter-Sports Director) Although Joerger has been an assistant for the Grizzlies for 5 seasons, stepping back into the head coaching role, has been a change.
(Dave Joerger-Memphis Head Coach) I think its a transition, I want to put my personality on the team. How we're going to practice, how we're going to play. The team has been here a long time, they've played together a long time. I don't want to come in and change a lot of things, I just want to make some things better.

(Tia Streeter-Sports Director) Tomorrow, Dave Joerger talks more about how life in Bismarck, has helped his growth in the NBA.
(Dave Joerger-Memphis head coach) To have the opportunity to do what I love, and do it in the highest league in the world, its like a dream come true. Its really cool"
