Sixth Graders Mummify Chickens

Posted:

It's a school project unlike any other...

and it involves 11 chickens.

Sixth Graders at Shiloh Christian School are beginning a six week project.

They're mummifying chickens just like the Egyptians did.

Today, they're cleaning the chickens, packing them with salt, and then adding cinnamon to mask the smell.

"With the exception of a few students who were concerned about being nauseous, they seemed really excited and once they got started you could just really see the joy and excitement on their face," says Nick Woodbury, Science Teacher, Shiloh Christian School.

The students will replace the salt and inspect the chickens once a week.

At the end of the mummification process, they'll wrap the chickens in muslin strips, varnish the outside, and put it in its sarcophagus.

"I'm really actually excited to see like what it turns out and just to observe it some more," says Maggie Mitzel, 6th Grader, Shiloh Christian School.

Woodbury says they'd like to bury the chickens later this year and then have the students dig them up before they graduate.
