Industrial Commission Discusses Oil Impact on Land in ND

There's concern about the oil industry's impact on land in North Dakota.

Last month Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem proposed a list of eighteen special places in state that would receive protection.

The State Industrial Commission took up the idea again today.

Stenehjem proposed there be a process and an opportunity for public comment in place.

He also assures the commission is not talking about prohibiting zones for people to develop their own minerals.

He says a process is necessary to assure that they're doing what they can to minimize the impact on significant land.

"Drill from multiple paths thereby reducing the number of roads and pipelines and those kinds of things. Can we move them perhaps to just a slightly different location. Can we paint them to blend in with the scenery. Just do some of those things that are important to protect our very extraordinary places here in North Dakota," says Wayne Stenehjem, ND Attorney General.

The proposal will be voted on at their meeting next Wednesday.
