Farm Bill Key Points

Posted: Updated:

After years of wrangling and months with no federal farm bill in force, Congress is getting close to a vote on a new five-year farm bill.

House and Senate negotiators have released the new bill to each chamber in the Capitol and votes on the new legislation are likely this week.

North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp says the compromise bill includes many important priorities she favored, including retroactive disaster payments to ranchers hit by disasters since the program expired in 2011, a buyout program for flooded farmland in the Devils Lake basin, updated calculations to figure in prevent plant acres when determining eligibility, de-coupling the number of planted acres from target prices for support payments - something Heitkamp says can help stop the farm legislation from influencing planting decisions.
