FRA Issues New Rail Safety Rules

The Federal Railroad Administration issues new rules for railroad safety.

After the train derailment in Casselton, Senator Heitkamp and other lawmakers called for improved rail inspections.

The new rules will work toward improving the flaw detection process.

They'll look at routing, timing, and speed decisions to help prevent derailments and minimize the impact if there is one.

The FRA also introduced rule making that will take a look at track inspections and the technology used in those inspections.

"We now have gotten the attention of the federal regulators and we're seeing, I think, a lot of very appropriate and I think good reaction from those regulators we'll continue to push because our communities deserve to know that everything that we're doing here is enhancing and improving the safety of this product moving on the rails," says Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

Heitkamp also agrees the nation's tank car fleet should be converted to a newer and safer type of car.

She says she has an expectation that this will happen sooner rather than later.
