App Helps Keep New Drivers Safe

Posted: Updated:

A new app is helping young drivers stay safe in North Dakota.

The "Road Ready" app was created by the Department of Transportation and Ford as part of a new driving program.

The app uses Wi-Fi and the GPS on your device to keep track of hours on the road, what type of roads they are driving on, and in what weather conditions.

New drivers should be on the road at least 50 hours before they can get their license.

Every week, the app will e-mail a progress report to keep parents and young drivers on track.

"The more experience teens gets the less likely they are to crash after they get their license so we're combining those 2 things. The most important person and the most important factor in reducing teen crashes: parents and experience. That's what the program is all about," President of the Safe Roads Alliance Jeff Larson said.

The app is free to download on most smart phones and tablets.
