What do you think it's like to have a serious disability?
Six state legislators, Minot State's current President, the President of North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities and our own Melinda Bolton were finding out today - as part of a five part race around the Dome at Minot State.
The goal of the race was to help Kalix, a local non-profit, raise awareness of giving hearts day, which is this Thursday.
Each leg of the race applied a different disability to the competitors.
Tasks included were auditory and written comprehension, navigating a wheelchair to the bathroom, reading with a visual impairment, and putting on dress shirts while wearing work gloves.
Jessica Petrick, says disabilities are not always so obvious.
(Jessica Petrick, Kalix Director of Human Resources) "Sometimes disabilities aren't always easy to see. A lot of us are walking around with some sort of disability where nobody knows. So it may be harder for us to perform a task in our everyday living or to actually hold a job because of our disability. So we just want to bring that awareness to the community."
