Oil Well Blows Near Watford City

Posted:

A Whiting Petroleum well near Watford City blew last night, and (as of this morning) is spilling 200 barrels of oil an hour.

Lynn Helms with the Department of Mineral Resources says the bottom piece of a 3 part "blow out preventer" failed.

The Health Department is on scene and vacuum trucks are trying to clean up the mess.

Helms says some mist did reach the ice on top of Cherry Creek, but that it shouldn't affect the water.

"This is a large one and also in terms of health and human risk, it's a big one. We've had inspectors on sight since I think about 40 minutes after it was reported so it's being managed but it's not under control yet and until it is, it's not a safe situation," Helms said.

He says there were no injuries and everyone was evacuated.

Right now he thinks the cold weather may have caused the piece to break.

He says Whiting Petroleum will pay all of the bills for this spill.
