Bismarck Curler Heads to World Junior Championships

Posted:

Curling's popularity seems to increase with every Winter Olympics.

One local curler has been cheering on team USA, but soon she will have her own group cheering her on.

Jared Piepenburg has the story.

Anna Hopkins/Bismarck Curler: "I got up at 4 am one morning to watch the game. So I'm pretty committed to team USA. "

She is also on her own team representing the United States.

Anna Hopkins: "There is 5 of us total. I am from Bismarck. 2 are from Duluth. One if from Fairbanks, Alaska and the other is living in Calgary, Alberta."

Anna Hopkins and her other 4 teammates won the Junior National tournament in Seattle which swept them into Worlds.

The World Juniors Championship, which consists of curlers age 21 and younger, will be held in Switzerland.

Anna Hopkins: "I've never curled anywhere other than the States and Canada so I'm pretty excited to go over seas and show what we've got.

To show what they've got -it has taken a lot of one thing.

Anna Hopkins:"a lot of practice. I've curled since I was 6. So I've been working really hard for this my whole life and now all this hard work has lead up to winning Nationals and now I'm going to Switzerland."

Hopkins leaves February 22nd and will be a member of one of the 10 teams competing for the world title.

Anna Hopkins: "We have a couple of days to transition to a 6/7 hour time change and then we start practice and then competition starts."

When asked what she was hoping for while there...her reply came easy.

Anna Hopkins: "Medals. Hoping the Gold variety. It should be fun."

Reporting in Bismarck- I'm Jared Piepenburg.

Anna's coach will be meeting them in Switzerland.

He is currently commentating in Sochi for the Olympic Games.
