Mandan back to state hockey for first time since 2008

Bismarck, ND -

The Mandan boys hockey team hasn't made the state tournament since 2008.
But the Braves are on the road back to Ralph Englestad Arena.

Braves head coach Matt Mullally says the trip is unexpected.
Mandan was the 7 seed at WDA, and came down to beating 4 seed Bottineau 5-4 to make the state tourney.
Mandan will play East region number 1, Grand Forks Central in round 1.
Mullally says his team isn't intimidated by the perennial power house.

Mandan is a young team, they have just 2 seniors.
Although their regular season saw them finish 8 and 15, Mullally said they were better than that record.
He felt they were right there, just waiting for their chance to break through.

The boys state hockey tournament begins Thursday from Grand Forks.
You can watch the boys action live from Ralph Englestad Arena, on the KX Weather Channel.
Grand Forks Central and Mandan are game three, they start at 6 pm.
Minot and Grand Forks Red River are the final game of day 1.
