County Delays Development Decision

Posted: Updated:

A proposed new development north of Minot just off of Highway 83 hit a road-block today when the Ward County Commission decided to punt on the question of approving or denying.

Northrop Acres is planned in Eureka Township -- with plans calling for about 50 single family lots for development.

That plan has been met with plenty of opposition however.

A majority of residents in the area say that the development should be denied...however the Eureka Township board voted to approve the project...both sides were voicing their opinions Tuesday morning...

(Jay Livingston - Eureka Township Resident) "This was not a quick decision...those meetings were long. The developers can tell you, they were there along with the fire department and the health department. All those folks talked with the residents of the township and the residents said I am sorry...we don't need that in this township." (Gary Granzotto - Eureka Township Board of Supervisors) "When a developer comes and fits into all of those requirements of the zoning ordinance, how do we say no to that? There has to be valid reasons even though the vast majority of people are in opposition...there has to be valid issues." (John Fjeldahl - Ward County Commissioner) "Even though there are a lot of people who are opposed to this. He is right. Are there legitimate reasons? When we vote, either way...you have to weigh that."

The vote was 4-1 with only Fjeldahl against the decision to send the issue back to the Planning Commission for further consideration...before it heads back to the County Commission at a later date.
