Williston: Affordable Senior Housing

Posted: Updated:

There are nearly 1,000 individuals classified as homeless in Williams County and surrounding townships.

The survey conducted by the North Dakota Homeless Coalition also found that 95 percent of those individuals came to the area for work --- and 72 percent ARE working.

Williston Economic Development Communications Director Katie Long says there is an affordable housing disconnect in Williston.

She says the affordable housing income limits set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development don't work for Williston --- many in need make too much money to qualify for affordable housing, but not enough to pay rent.

(Katie Long, Williston Economic Development Communications Director) "Our average median income is $10,000 higher that the rest of the state. That's because we have a per capita personal income level of $117,000. It's a significant earnings difference."

HUD income levels are also coming into play for Legacy at Central Place.

Lutheran Social Services is completing a renovation of the former junior high school building --- a project partially funded by HUD for affordable SENIOR housing options in Williston.

(Katie Long, Williston Economic Development Communications Director) "Two seniors living together cannot earn more than $32,520. If you're living off a social security check, this may be easy to do. But if you're working still, which a lot of our seniors are, 55 and up, they're still working for another 15 years in most cases. That's not very easy to meet."

Of the 44 units in the Legacy Living building, more than half are still available.

For application information --- contact Lutheran Social Services at 701-271-3207 or email housing@lssnd.org.
