People from all over the United States gather at the Seven Seas in Mandan.
About 250 people are attending the Indian Child Welfare & Wellness conference -- they will be having a contest to see who came the farthest.
The conference begins with a presentation from Judge William Thorne -- along with other local and national speakers.
"The importance of the conference is for people that work with Native American children that are in out-of-home placements to learn more about culture, working together and to learn more about the resources that are available out there," said Sandra Bercier, conference coordinator.
The conference runs through Friday.
There will be a public showing and panel discussion of the movie "Reel Injun" starring Clint Eastwood Thursday night.
