Dreamcatcher Hockey

Posted: Updated:

The crack of the bat is something Dreamcatcher's team members in Minot are used to...

But that was replaced with a different sound...the sound of sticks, and pucks recently.

Perry Olson shows us what the group was doing -- thanks to some help from the pros.

Their games are usually contested here...on the diamond -- but winter isn't keeping the Dreamcatchers on the sideline this winter...

The baseball field was replaced recently...with a court -- for floor hockey...with help from the Minot Minotauros.

(Nigel Dube - Minotauros Assistant Coach) "It is an opportunity for us to give back to the community that gives so much to us. The players come out here, many of them come to the games every night and we want to give back to them."

The Junior team was paired up with these special athletes for games at Edison -- keeping the activity going through the winter months...

(Michelle Bliven - Dreamcatchers) "It has kind of started to be our mission now that kids with disabilities can play all sports...it doesn't matter."

And they were certainly enjoying the challenge...Michelle Bliven has seen Dreamcatchers grow from 13 kids 10 years ago...to about 70 now -- and many, including son Aaron, were here...

(Michelle Bliven - Dreamcatchers) "Give your yoohoo! That is what I am talking about!" (Nigel Dube - Minotauros Assistant Coach)"Hockey is about more than just playing hockey. It is about learning life lessons and this is an opportunity to learn those lessons. You can see them out there laughing just as much as the kids are! It is just a blast for everybody." (Michelle Bliven - Dreamcatchers) "It only takes a couple of minutes and everybody is having a great time! They are great with the kids."

Soon winter will give way to spring and summer -- and it will be back to the field. But this was a great chance to learn a new sport...and continue to build friendship with fellow athletes as well...

(Michelle Bliven - Dreamcatchers) "I like it as much as he does!"
