New President for MSU

Posted: Updated:

A new president has been chosen for Minot State University.

The State Board of Higher Education today picked Dr. Steve Shirley to take over for Dr. David Fuller by this fall.

The selection came after the board had interviewed the three finalists for the job.

Jim Olson reports.

Dr. Steve Shirley put a new pin on his lapel at Noon - he had just been chosen to become the president of Minot State University.

(Dr. Steve Shirley, New MSU President) "This is a terrific campus, it's a wonderful community, a lot of wonderful faculty, staff and students. So I'm just excited to get started and hit the ground running."

Before he can hit the ground at Minot State, Shirley will have to wrap up his duties as president at Valley City State University.

(Dr. Steve Shirley, New MSU President) "Wrapping things up from my standpoint at Valley City State, meet with the chancellor and identify a starting date, it's going to be a busy couple of months with the transition, finding housing, and all sorts of things."

Housing is an issue Shirley says is critical to helping MSU get back to growing enrollment. In his interview with Board of Higher Education members before being chosen for the job, he said it's an area he wants to address.

(Dr. Steve Shirley, New MSU President) "Affordable housing and those kinds of things and certainly that impacts when you're talking about student recruitment and faculty and staff recruitment so certainly that's going to be a key issue."

Shirley says the growing oil industry presents opportunities for MSU students that he wants to make sure are fully explored. And the business growth should mean more potential students.

(Dr. Steve Shirley, New MSU President) "Being able to get out and interact with, not just the folks who are here who have been in this state but all those new bodies and companies and people that are moving into the state - we need to get out and sell the wonderful story of Minot State University

Shirley is a Fargo native who says he's pleased to advance his career while keeping his family - including daughter Anna - in his home state.

(Dr. Steve Shirley, New MSU President) "I'm a fourth generation North Dakotan, Anna's a fifth generation North Dakotan, my wife is a transplant from Minnesota but happy to have here in the state.

Shirley was chosen over two other finalists - Dr. Martin Slann of the University of Texas at Tyler, and Dr. Lorrie Clemo of State University of New York at Oswego.

(Kirsten Diedrigh, Board of Higher Education President) "We had three very strong candidates today, I think their interviews went very well, and I'm so pleased that Steve Shirley has accepted our request for him to be the president of Minot State University."

Dr. Shirley will be taking over the MSU presidency from Dr. David Fuller, who is retiring.
