State Penitentiary Close to Capacity

Record population and more crime in North Dakota is filling up jails fast.

But there's also a need to house more hardened criminals in Bismarck.

A 64 million dollar expansion of the State Penitentiary was completed late last year.

Human Resource Officer Tim Tausend says they're not overcrowded yet, but general population beds are close to capacity.

He says their resources are being taxed.

They have more inmates than ever and have more people on probation and parole.

A state commission is discussing alternatives to incarceration such as easing of mandatory sentencing for non-violent offenses and various treatment resources.

Tausend says they're hoping to see alternatives slow the growth in the number of inmate admissions.
