Bond is Set for Trinity Principal

Posted: Updated:

The principal of Dickinson Trinity High School who is accused of starting a fire in the building had his bond hearing today.

Court documents say 30 year old Thomas Sander started the fire in a file cabinet in the administrative office area.

Thomas Sander is charged with Arson and Endangerment by fire, both Class B felonies.

He appeared by monitor in court today.

Judge Greenwood set his bond at $500,000.

"The alleged offense endangered the life of a person who was present on the premises. It is a situation where the alleged offense has had a rather traumatic impact on the community. I do determine and find that there was a significant danger to the community," District Judge Dann Greenwood said.

Sander said in court today he has an apartment in Dickinson, has no family in North Dakota and came here in September for his job as principal.

"Are you aware whether or not you are currently employed," Judge Greenwood asked.

"I have not been in contact with any individual from Trinity High School in the past, I guess since Monday your honor, no one has contacted me so I am not aware," Sander replied.

Sander's preliminary hearing is set for April 21st at 2:30.

The maximum sentence for these 2 Class B felonies is 20 years and $40,000.

Judge Greenwood said if Sander is able to post bond, he must remain law-abiding, he cannot contact anyone from Trinity and he must stay in North Dakota.
