Fargo Police Officer Dies by Suicide

WDAY-TV Fargo -

The F-M community is mourning the tragic loss of a Fargo Police officer.

Lieutenant Jeff Skuza who served the department for 23 years died this morning of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Lieutenant Skuza leaves behind a wife, two teenage children, and a brotherhood of law enforcement officers who remember him fondly for his service and friendly face.

Authorities say Skuza called dispatchers around 4:30 this morning, and told them to send officers to Holy Cross Cemetery, south of 52nd avenue, bordering I-29.

When they arrived, they found Skuza unresponsive, due to a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

Paramedics were called, but they were unable to save him.

During his time with the department Skuza wore many hats including patrol officer, sergeant for multiple departments within the force as well as a lieutenant.

He also helped to make the force's Peer Assistance Crisis Team a success.

Police Chief Keith Ternes choked up a bit - saying Skuza will be missed by everyone.

Today was a bad day for the police department. Tomorrow will be easier. I suspect that in the coming days we will have some real challenges to confront.

At this time funeral arrangements are pending.

There has never been an officer killed in the line of duty on the Fargo Police Department, the most recent death of a patrol officer was from natural causes more than 10-years ago.

Since the shooting took place outside of city limits- Cass County deputies are conducting the investigation.
