Bishop Ryan Lions Begin Spring Workouts

Posted: Updated:

The winter sports season hasn't quite wrapped up yet but already the spring sports season has begun with the first baseball workouts of the season. 20 players are out for this year's Bishop Ryan Lions baseball team that returns all but one of its players off of its region championship team. The Lions should be well rounded with a solid and deep pitching rotation combined with a fast and powerful hitting lineup.

Brent Nelson, Lions Baseball Coach:I feel really good. When you got 8 starters coming back out of a baseball team, you can't ask for much more and we got all our pitchers back from last year. One problem was we only played a month last year so they're still kind of new, I feel comfortable with who we're going to throw out there and hopefully we can get two months of baseball in this year and we should be good by the end of the year. We got 8 kids that I feel comfortable that can get out there and throw any varsity game for me so I'm very excited. We got some good arms and if we can stay healthy we should have a good rotation. We hit the ball really well last year until we got to the state tournament. When you got guys leading like Mason Kramer, Austin Eggl, Nick Berentson leading off and Jake Magnuson, you got Brody Bosch with some wheels so we got a good mix of kids and we can put them in different spots against different pitchers.

Jake Magnuson, Senior:We're feeling confident this year like you said we only lost one senior and it's good to get that last year we have for our pitchers to get experience and so I think our pitching's going to be key this year and hopefully that experience last year helped them out a lot.

Austin Eggl, Senior:We got a real balanced lineup we got some athletic dudes at the front to get on base and make some things happen on the basepaths, we got some solid average and power hitters throughout the middle of it and it just compliments each other pretty well.

As for the region, the Lions aren't looking by any teams and expect Velva to be one of their top challengers.

Nelson:Velva, they're always good, they got their pitcher back this year, Surrey didn't lose many kids so they can be pretty good also Max-Garrison, they can be sneaky at times too so there's four teams that are pretty good that battle back and forth.

The Lions open their season April 3rd hosting MLSG-K.
