North Dakota is producing oil faster then ever before.
Along with that, natural gas is being produced just as fast and oil companies are failing to keep up.
According to experts in global flaring reduction -- in 2011, the U-S wasted about one quarter of natural gas that was produced and North Dakota was a big part of that.
They say that a gathering system for the natural gas is needed and oil producers need to look at alternatives to flaring.
Senator Heidi Heitkamp says that North Dakota is seeing unparalleled increases in Natural Gas production and there are serious issues that need to be addressed.
"We are flaring way too much natural gas and natural gas liquids. A lot of people say that is a byproduct and the byproduct is difficult to capture. But I don't think any of us conservative North Dakotans can look out at the flares and say that's a plan for the future. We think these are valuable BTU's that are going up in the air and we need to capture them." says Senator Heidi Heitkamp
The United States is the fifth most flare-producing country in the world, North Dakota accounts for a-third of that.
