Panel Discusses Casselton Train Derailment

The train derailment near Casselton is still an ongoing topic.

The North Dakota League of Cities hosts a discussion panel on the incident.

Cass County officials explain how the event happened, the response order of events, and reports on how well the situation was handled.

City officials across the state listen in and ask questions to better help prepare in case of a derailment in the future.

"It seems that they're very much engaged and it is high on their priority list to be working with communities," says Larry Weil, Planning Director, West Fargo.

Katie Andersen, Mayor of Jamestown says her focus is to make sure that Jamestown's emergency exercises look at the possibilities of a train derailment and that all of their communication is in order.

"So far, since I've been Mayor, we haven't done any exercises that would include a train derailment in town and that's something that I think we can consider in some of those exercises now," says Katie Andersen, Mayor of Jamestown.

Cass County officials say they were pretty satisfied with how the derailment was handled but should have had better communication overall.
