Scam Targets Homeowners

Posted: Updated:

A company out of South Dakota is marketing a new kind of scam.

It is targeted at new home owners, and directs them to pay a high mark-up to attain a copy of a deed to their own home.

North Dakota Guaranty and Title Company, said with so many new residents moving to North Dakota the scam could be very profitable.

(Paula Bachmeier, Senior Vice President) "Over the last few months people have been getting a form called a de-processing notice in the mail, and that de-processing notice tells them that to protect their ownership interest in property they need to pay this company to provide them a copy of their deed. And this company is so happy to do that for $83. People don't need to do that in North Dakota. First of all their deeds are recorded if they are getting they're getting the tax statement they know the property is in their name. If it closed in a title company the title company is always going to make sure things get recorded properly."

Because the scam does not break any laws the company can not be prosecuted. If you need a copy of a property deed just go to county recorders office and it will only cost you one dollar.
