Veterans Tell Their Stories

Posted: Updated:

A teacher at the University of Mary is giving Bismarck Veterans a chance to tell their stories.
Ben Smith met up with some of them and has this story.
"He who lifts ships is called kinsmen and the gun ships lancers.  We were stationed at Camp Eagle..."
A group of men meet in a little room at the library a couple times a month, to write about their experiences serving for the U.S. military.
"When you think you can't hold you're breath any longer, you can..."
Coached by University of Mary professor Nita Ritzke, these Veterans remember what it was like to fight in a war.
"I was on a big ship, an aircraft carrier, and I would see these huge waves would come at the ship..."
Steve Schilling served in the Navy in the early seventies.
"(shaking)... and I would think 'Oh God!'"
This writing workshop has helped him relive some of his life's greatest moments.
"It's given me the chance to show that I do have some unique experiences that nobody else has."
He also listens, to the stories of his fellow Vets.
"You hear them tell their story and it's really amazing"
Thomas served as a helicopter gunner in Vietnam.
"You know I understand that they are not even teaching Vietnam war in schools anymore." says Thomas Turck who served as a Door Gunner in Vietnam.
He belives that reliving these memories is important for younger generations
"You know history, it will repeat itself but often we still forget.  It's important that people remember what we did."
"My military experience kinda turned out to be the grand experience of my life."
For KXnews, I'm Ben Smith

The Veterans will perform next Saturday, April 5th at the Bismarck Library.
