Berthold Bond Vote on Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Tomorrow is a day for voting in the area...

Minot Public School voters go to the polls to give thumbs up or down to a nearly 40 million dollar proposal...

And in the Lewis and Clark district to the west of Minot, voters there will be voting on a 15 million dollar proposal.

Perry Olson has more on the vote that could mean additions onto schools in Berthold and Plaza.

The plans are impressive for the Lewis and Clark school district...two large additions to two schools -- in Berthold and Plaza -- to handle the student population that has increased in recent years...

(Brian Nelson - Lewis and Clark Superintendent) "We are not doing it for the...what could happen. We are doing it because we need it now for the kids that we do have now."

To build these additions -- voters need to give the go-ahead. It would mean an increase in property taxes of about 225 a year per 100-thousand dollars of home value. Superintendent Brian Nelson, a veteran of 18 years with the district, says the need is certainly there...

(Brian Nelson - Lewis and Clark Superintendent) "Berthold, ever since I have been there, has needed a new gym and a bigger lunch room area. Currently they are serving almost 300 kids and staff that is probably designed for 150."

Plans call for adding on to two schools...and shutting down another. With this plan, Makoti's building would close in about two years. So why close space to build more...Nelson says that facility is so old -- it is almost a lost cause now...

(Brian Nelson - Lewis and Clark Superintendent) "To do anything with it you almost need to start over...and to do that it would take all of our funds and we would only be doing something for 70 kids. This way we are doing something for 400 kids."

That...and Nelson says staff can be more efficient with just two improved facilities...

(Brian Nelson - Lewis and Clark Superintendent) "We can better utilize our teachers and our staff if we go to two buildings. The teachers will have less travel time between the two schools."

The final call comes tomorrow. In Berthold, Perry Olson, KX News.

Voting is being held at the senior citizens centers in Carpio, Berthold, Plaza, Makoti and Ryder.

Polls are open from seven in the morning to seven at night.

Also, the Minot Public Schools bond vote is from 7am to 7pm tomorrow at the Auditorium.
