The Beach City Council has approved the rezoning of 280 acres just west of town that could someday be home to an oil rail port.
It is now zoned as industrial and owned by Beach Rail port and Williston Basin Management.
The companies have not requested a building permit of any kind yet.
Council Member Tim Marman says if and when they do, it will be a long process before any construction starts and many conditions will be put in place.
Marman says that's been reassuring to many people who live around the Beach area.
"Actually I think most of the people, this is my own personal observation from what I've heard from people around Beach and the ones that have approached me, most of them are in favor of it and they're all concerned about the safety of the rail port but they're basically in favor of it. We need something here to boost the economy," Beach City Council Member Tim Marman said.
Council Member Marman says they have visited two other oil rail ports, including the one in Dickinson, and they are pleased with the operation there.
