Neighbor Saves Woman in Pit Bull Attack

Posted: Updated:

A Minot woman walking in her southwest neighborhood last night was attacked by a pit bull.

Joni Moen was taking her own dog for a walk when the pit bull attacked, knocking her down and clamping its jaws onto her arm.

Her screams spurred another neighbor to take action to save her.

Here's what Jay Hight says he saw - and did - when the dog was in full attack mode against the defenseless woman.

(Jay Hight, Minot) "I was in the garage for a minute or two and I heard all of the sudden some voices, it was women crying for help, then I heard dogs barking. So I went outside and I looked down the street, down that way in the other cul-de-sac, I saw her laying on the ground, trying to grab for her dog and it looked like a rather large dog had come out from somewhere and it attacked her and her dog. I got up to the dog and I just took the bat and started whacking the dog on the back of the neck and the head, just so I could free Joni and her dog. Joni got away but the big dog had the small dog in his mouth yet. He was big dog and it was a struggle, he was big and strong. Finally I could get behind him with the bat and I put my body and my legs on the back of the dog and I pulled as much as I could on the back of the dog to choke it so it would release the small dog. Luckily another gentleman came out of no where and the woman that was there already, we got the dog freed and the little dog got away and got home safely. I was the first one down there and I just was doing what I thought a good neighbor should do and help out and I hope that someone would do the same for me if my kids were out there."

Joni Moen was treated in the hospital and is home now.

She says her dog was seriously hurt in the attack and is barely still alive.

Minot Police say the pit bull is owned by Colin Tofteland of Oregon, who is visiting his mother, Nancy.

Nancy Tofteland was also bit by the dog as she tried to get the animal off of Moen.

Police say the owner produced paperwork showing the dog had up-to-date vaccinations.

The dog will be held in quarantine for ten days.
