Ordinance Covers Many Animals

Posted: Updated:

This week's pit bull attack in Minot calls attention to the city's regulations regarding nuisance animals.

The city of Minot has a fairly broad ordinance on animals that are dangerous or can be considered a nuisance.

The ordinance has a long list of animals that cannot be kept as pets, including several breeds of pit bull.

But beyond that, it also requires owners of any legal pet to have the animal under control and not bothering or threatening others.

(Colleen Auer, Minot City Attorney) "It can be situations where dogs are not controlled and they're allowed to make deposits in people's yards and the owners don't take care of it and don't pick it up, that can declared a public nuisance as with animals that are constantly barking day and night, that also can constitute a nuisance."

Auer says if you have a complaint about a dog, cat, or other pet, you should contact the police department.
