Relay for Life Team Meets a Special Goal

Posted: Updated:

You've seen it in the news before -- Someone shaves their head to show support to a friend with cancer.

But could you do it?

Emily Medalen has more on how one area woman stuck by her friend and kept a special tradition going.

Kim Whitish and Desiree Burleson have been supporting those who have been touched by cancer for years by working with relay for life.

But it never crossed their minds that they would soon have to live through it personally.

(Desiree Burleson, Kim's Friend/Co-worker) "She was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and it hit me really hard."

So hard, that Desiree knew she had to do something that would make an impact.

(Desiree Burleson, Kim's Friend/Co-worker) "I asked our relay for life team, if we raised 7 thousand dollars for relay for life by Kim's last day of therapy, which was last week, I would shave my head, and then I would donate it to 'Pantene Beautiful Lengths' because that's something that Kim does about every other year, and she's not able to right now because she has lost her hair. So I'm doing it for her."

(Kim Whitish, Inspiration For Donation) "I tried to talk Desiree out of it when she first brought up the idea, but she would not have it. So, its, I mean, I don't even know how to explain it."

The group of women reached, and surpassed their goal, and came together as Desiree said goodbye to her locks with a smile.

Kim says that the endless love and care they have shown her, is something she will never forget.

(Kim Whitish, Inspiration For Donation) "They are truly my support system. I mean, my husband and I, we don't have family here. So these girls are my family."

And according to Desiree, losing her hair seems like nothing, because her friendship with Kim means everything.

(Kim Whitish, Inspiration For Donation) "Desiree is the most selfless person that I know. And I can't believe someone would do this for me."

(Kim Whitish, Inspiration For Donation) "This group of girls is the most amazing blessing I could ever ask for."

Now, it's Kim's turn to be supported.

In Minot, Emily Medalen, KX News.

Kim isn't releasing information about her current health until she is able to first tell her parents in person.
